5 Common Mistakes Moving Offices - InteGrand

So many details can fall through the cracks when planning on moving offices. You could be expanding or simply moving, but opening a new office is complicated and overwhelming. When doing it yourself, there are some common mistakes you want to avoid:

1. Not planning ahead. It’s absolutely vital to plan ahead in order to keep both your old space organized and your new space prepared for the methods you’ll be using to move in. Make sure you know that you have sufficient number of staff for delegating moving tasks. Coordinate and communicate with the people who are in charge of the move: good planning leads to good communication, which leads to timeliness and good organization. If you know where most things are going to go before you put them there, it will be a whole lot easier communicating with your employees what’s going on, and keep everyone from getting frustrated during the actual act of moving. This is especially important because it will be necessary to keep your old location functional even in the midst of moving. It is not easy, but with good planning it is absolutely possible.

 

2. Compressing the schedule. It is super important that you don’t panic if a vendor is late or if something unexpected happened to delay the move-in date. Make sure you give enough time to vendors and employees to plan out and complete their tasks for you. The vendors will not be happy if you start asking them to work double-time, on your schedule, when what happened was really out of their control. If they are the reason that your schedule has been delayed, talk with them rationally and see if you can come to a happy compromise on the solution. Allowing stress and rushing through the process will only create more problems down the road that will be even more complicated: moving is all about preparation and setup, so that once everything is settled, it will be easy to resume functionality in the new office space.

 

3. Not considering professionals. Of course, it can really appeal to some people to have more control over the situation by doing things yourself. But do you really have more control that way?
